  Common Mispellings: Pekignese

  Appearance: The Pekingese is a small, compact dog with a stocky, heavy build. The Pekingese has a pear-shaped body with larger back legs than front legs. The Pekingese is is slightly longer than it is tall. The gait of a Pekingese is proud and dignified, not hurried.

  Life Expectancy: The Pekingese can live to be 13 - 15 years when properly cared for.

  Size: A Pekingese should be between 6 - 9 inches tall and weigh less than 14 pounds when fully grown.

  Characteristics: Pekingese tend to snore while they are sleeping. The Pekingese has a bold and direct character with a distinctive expression.

  Temperament: The Pekingese was breed to be a lap dog. They are courageous dogs. Pekingese are not provokers, but will not run and hide if confronted either. The Pekingese tends to be reserved around strangers. A pet Pekingese will be extremely devoted and loyal to its family. Pekingese are known for their stubbornness.

  Family Dog: The Pekingese will make a good family dog for people in a house or an apartment.

  Coat: The Pekingese has a thick undercoat with a long, straight, coarse undercoat. The Pekingese is known for its mane around the shoulders giving the appearance of a miniature lion.

  Grooming: The coat of a Pekingese will need to be combed or brushed at least every week to keep from matting. The wrinkle over their nose should be cleaned daily to avoid infection.

  Weather: The Pekingese are extremely sensitive to weather conditions. They can easily die of heat prostration and thus should be kept indoors in the air conditioning in warm weather. Pekingese can be outside in cooler weather during the day but should never be left outside to sleep.

  Exercise: Pekingese are playful dogs, but not overly playful and excited. The Pekingese will enjoy leisurely walks outdoors or will be equally happy playing indoors.

   

  Health: The Pekingese has no major health concerns. The have some predisposition to the following: elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, KCS, patellar luxation, disticiasis, trichiasis, skin fold dermatitis and urolithiasis. The Pekingese is sensitive to anesthesia.
